I wonder if it has been retouched by the photographer, as the buttons look odd as well and it was quite common to retouch photo's, it is not just a photoshop thing.

An OSD badge just appearing "odd" as it's been more clearly defined by hand?
Particularly likely if the image from an old book or magazine?

Edit - as Jerry's suggested (while I was trying to convert thoughts to words).

Just noticed - collar tabs appear to be worn in the photo although a regimental badge is worn.
I scanned the article, didn't register all the detail - what colour tabs would they be?

Those would be scarlet staff gorgets, so he would have been a staff officer. I believe all officers below Colonel still wore their regimental badges and buttons.

A clearer picture of a staff officer wearing his regimental cap badge, in this case that of the 10th Londons.

Is the 10th London's officer wearing red 'tabs" and cap band? They look rather dark, could they be of another colour, say green?

No, they would be scarlet. The gorgets have a crimson gimp cord running up the center, which is of course darker than scarlet, but shows lighter in the pics. Old BW photos can't be interpreted well with regard to color.
