Fake Irish Rifles Badge Question
This badge I had was deemed a fake, and after reading that I looked at it very closely and have to agree....I think. To me the back was not crisp, and the edges of the shamrock on the front were harsh, i.e. my finger sort of caught on it when I moved it across the badge. Here's a front picture, but didn't take one of the back after it was deemed a fake.
My question is what makes this a fake for sure? maybe what I mention above? Or, something else? No worry as I have given it away as a gift, so I will not be selling it. Just trying to learn. Thanks, Terry Last edited by Home Guard; 11-08-20 at 02:12 AM. |

14th Battn Royal Irish Rifles
Hi Terry, There are dozens of threads on the forum about that badge, one of the most faked badges out there, a search will show them.
one of the ways to tell good from bad is the 5x jewels on the base of the crown, yours appear all identical which is bad i believe. others will comment i'm sure. regards John |

Thanks Cavalryman. I am guessing my search criteria was not right as I didn't fnid anything. I'll give it another go.

Thanks Tim, That search did lead me to some interesting reading about this badge.
The thing that sticks out to me more than anything is the edging around the shamrock. On the real ones it seemed rounded, while on mine it is definitely a flat edging (you can see it in my picture). Also, the stem seems a bit shorter. I didn't doubt it was bad, but without knowing why I've not learned anything. As I said, I gave it to a chap who bought one of my good Rifles badges and clearly ID'd it as a restrike/fake. I didn't realize it was such an expensive/rare badge (in some posts I read it was getting 100 GBP!!!). So might serve as a nice filler for him. And if he asks me now I have something I can share with him. Thank you gentlemen! Terry |

This is also a version I would not think to be good though it is less common than the version you have. I bought an example as a stated fake from a dealer out of curiosity. I am only a Great War in general collector though. Regards, Paul.

Thanks Wardog, I am learning, because the one you posted sure looks like one I'd have bought before joining this forum!
