And now for something completely different...
This note was left in a WW1 German dug out and later found by an artilleryman.
Have shared this with a few collecting friends and thought that it might raise a smile or two on the Forum. Almost has a "Yar! Sucks boo!" tone to it. |

Well, it beats me what the writer meant! Perhaps a translation would be order? For both the letter and the “Yar! Sucks boo!”

Hi
The "Yar! Etc". is something from my 96 year old Mum's day but I always took it to mean like a big rude gesture to whoever had slighted you.... It's now and then that you realise that you pick up words and phrases that are of another age.... The language is a sort of a left-handed compliment to the person who was brave enough to enter the dugout but the implication being, as I take it, that they would now be poisoned. Anyway, just a quaint little relic of a bygone age. There are some letters that a Forum member has kindly offered to help translate as German handwriting of the period was very different to what is now taught. |
