Hi John

It's a very common backmark on both military and civilian uniform buttons over a long period of time. Unfortunately, I don't know which company used it.

Thanks David, I thought that I had a reference to the maker among my files but have nothing.

I've often heard that it was Firmin's, but never seen any evidence to support the claim.

Firmin is certainly possible. It must have been used by a major manufacturer, given the large number of buttons on which it appears and the wide time span over which it was used.

Perhaps it was used on buttons sold through retailers who didn't want to "advertise" the name of the manufacturer?
