A lot of lovely badges shown. For me, probably the Welsh collar.

Here's mine, heavy item in silver and gilt. Sadly never been able to find out when it was worn, or what it was worn on.

Nice badge by the way. Could have "belonged" to one of those obscure Welsh Militia units?? There is a collar on ebay that looks the same and is (allegedly) a Welsh Regiment collar... Last edited by wright241; 12-10-13 at 10:52 AM. Reason: Update |

The badge on eBay is a collar to the Welsh Regiment.
It's about one half the size of the one I've posted. Two very similar patterns were worn as cap badges, although these were bi-metal and silver and gilt by the band and RSM respectively in India. This motto was never in use by either the 23rd or 24th, nor by the 69th prior to amalgamation in 1881. I've not checked the 43rd when they were a Monmouthshire unit. It is thought to have come from a family based in Monmouthshire and chosen by the then 41sts CO's wife. It has been used both in this form and slightly different forms by various Militia and Volunteer units, together with at least three spellings by the 41st themselves. This is the last variation and the correct spelling. |

Unlikely for this one as it's silver and gilt. It could of course be an Officer's PP.

And the one version of the spelling when translated came out as better death or dishonour, rather than better death than dishonour, so they had to get it changed, or so I believe.
An interesting badge Griff and not one I have seen before other than the collar version of which I have a few.

David,
Die cast. See attached. I've even posted this one in the MHS Bulletin (No.246 page 65), but no luck there either Kevin |

Very nice.
Looks like there may have been a bit of work done on that top lug. Unfortunately I don't have the "Regiment" issue that covered this regiment - but I assume that you do..? I do have a full run of Military Illustrated and will have a search through those to see whether they have any thing. In the meantime, best of luck. David |

David,
No the top lug is "as is" and contemporary. Yes I do have that "Regiment" issue and about 6/7 other reference books to the 41st/Welsh and sweet FA in any of them concerning this one. Any help would be much appreciated. Hwyl, Kevin PS Perhaps the Mods could move this part of the thread into the unknowns as it is rather high jacking Andy's original thread. |

Kevin,
Still looking. So far, I have found a fair few articles on the 41st/RWF - when in the US etc plus a few on their uniforms etc, but nothing about your badge. Ongoing. |

Favourite Badge
My favourite badge is the one that started me out on serious research on my subject, although it is of a straight forward design it changed and opened doors and enabled for to meet or correspond with members of the Forum world wide.

Wonderful badge Andy, I have a similar one in silver with 3 lugs.
One if the nicest and simple badges that I know of is for the Welsh Guards! |
