RNAS Armoured cars
From yesterday's Sunday Times - SLt Edward Montgomery Miles RNVR with officers of the RNAS Armoured Cars at Yelverton, Dartmoor in early 1915. One of several previously unseen images donated to the IWM recently by his niece.

Hi Mike, interestingly two types of collar badges. Any close ups of them? Mike

This was the only image in the article in the Sunday Times which showed him pre-Gallipoli. But a search of the IWM image library may provide others taken at that time on Dartmoor. (or a higher definition version of the one that I scanned in from the colour supplement.) Mike

Flying Backwards
Just searching through again on RNAS ACC and noticed that the officer, second from right on the front row, has his lace going the wrong way, leading to the front! I have noticed this with some photographs of RN officers before as individual photographs, but took it that the image was reversed when printing. Warnford VC is one example previously noted.
Putting your shoulder tabs on the wrong way around was a "drinks fine" I remember recently that a programme on television, "New Tricks", had a character in Gibraltar dressed as a Commander, who was "flying backwards with his shoulder boards. Even worse, joining Greenwich Naval College for the first time, guys in my class had one lace leading to the front and one to the back on their shoulder boards. Mixed them up when opening the packages! |

SUPER Photos! Thanks for posting them.
Their armoured Car collar badges, would they be matched set -- ie; left & right facing cars? RCN Bryan |

A friend of mine who collects RNAS tells me that the collar badges only come with the car facing the viewer's left. I have been promised pictures which I will post.

Hi Jon, can you kindly check that? I have only ever seen them with the car facing right as you view it? Admittedly, I have only ever seen 4 or 5, so I am not questioning your friend, just checking.
Cheers, Tim |

I admit that as a pupil of the Lt Phillips school of navigation I may have got me port and starboard confused. I'll wait for the pictures.

Hello Jon. I have two similar badges to the ones you picture- similar colouring. I wonder if the left one was the only version issued in a dark finish. The left version has a distorted look to the rear of the wheels- the right one clear detail rear of wheels. Regards, Paul.
