Default 60 WW1 Badges + Carnatic Ava Mysore

A Few days ago I got a phone call offering a frame of badges. Interestingly the seller stated that these had been collected by his father (as a boy) during WW1 from soldiers being sent from the battlefields to the Isle of Wight for convalesce. The boy would ask the soldiers sitting along the promenade if he could have their badges - some said no - they would be in trouble with their NCO's; others willingly gave him the badge.

With that story came later by email this photo of the 60 badges:

much of it is run of the mill stuff, but now that they are with me, on close inspection everything looks good, thus reinforcing the story.

In that lot is the hallmarked badge shown below. Thought I could go straight to Cox and ID this one, but I've draw a blank - dose anyone recognise it?

the date letter is Z (Birmingham) but cannot make out which 'z' it is... the likely options are 1899, 1924, 1949

Hi Mike,
Does the Aussie one have Tiptaft on a slider plus the badge itself ? If so, these can sell for between £80 - £110, I have seen them sell for both figures !!! Very nice find by the way, lovely stuff. All the best,
Wilf.

I thought this was lacking voiding under the crown but on close inspection it is there, but an oval piece of metal has been brazed over it:

Default 7th Madras Infantry

Although I cannot find a picture of the badge with the 7 & Carnatic Ava Mysore wording: I am pretty sure it's the badge of:

7th Madras Infantry.

The unit was called this between 1885 to 1903, they then became the 67th Punjabis.

Here are the 67th Punjabis battle honours of Carnatic Ava & Mysore carried over from the 7th Madras Infantry. Plus the badge has a qvc type crown. The spike is no doubt for attachment to the turban.

So an old & very interesting badge worn by someone who couldn't forget his old battalion, maybe. A lot of Indian troops in the Great War were hospitalised in Brighton. Defineately not run of the mill.

Alan.

Irish Dragoons osd seen better days, finish worn and broached - would have to have been worn in the field like that to go with the story:

That Manchesters makes me a whole lot happier about my one being a genuine example. That has made my day.

If it was collected during WW1 the hall mark must be 1899??

agreed Jerry, if you accept the story that is, we must all be doubting thomas's in this game 'till the evidence proves otherwise. But I must say I've got a good feeling about this lot.

Many thanks for that Alan, it's given me something to go on.
