16th Irish Division Signs 1918
i recently posted two examples of this badge for identification.
Detailed research by a member of The Military Heraldry Society suggests that they were part of a scheme adopted by the 16th Irish Division when it was reconstructed in early 1918. The shamrock was red for the senior brigade, green for the middle and yellow for the junior, the numbers 1 to 3 indicating the seniority of the Bn in the Brigade. The Society now has images of the red and yellow signs but is looking for a green example. Images of shamrocks in the other colours with different numbers also sought. Are there any more out there? Tim,
That fantastic. Many thanks. If the schedule of units associated with this system has been correctly interpreted your Shamrock would have been worn by 14th (Service) Bn, The Leicestershire Regiment as the first Bn of 47th Brigade in the 16th Irish Division of 1918. Jon |
