Default Unknown buckle

Can someone identify the regiment and time period of this buckle.

No idea of the regiment but would guess a Rifle Volunteer item as "In defence" was the sort of motto that some Volunteer Corps used and a date 1859-1888 but hopefully someone can be more specific.

Agreed, a generic buckle offered to those units that didnt have their own buckles perhaps.

The cross device in the centre is like the badge of Durham university OTC, possibly a RV predecessor?
