Default WW2 COUNTY OF LONDON BATTALION CAP BADGE

I have quite a few County of London Battalion cap badges, some are WW2 and most of those are Kings Royal Rifle Corps Maltese Cross based - some worn by the Home Guard. Quite a few years ago I mislaid an 8th COUNTY of London Battalion badge(NOT 8th City of London Battalion),which had been with a collection belonged to a Home Guard Sergeant. With out turning the attic upside down, is there anyone who could supply a picture of such a badge as although it is a long time ago, I just cannot recall if it was a straightforward KRRC or had 8th County , in relief, inside the circle in the centre of the cross. Any information gratefully received.

Welcome to the forum.

There are quite a few collectors of London Regiment and related units on here, myself included.

Re your question battalions 1-8th were City of London, 9th onwards were styled County. I do not believe this nomenclature changed from inception in 1908 until disbandment in 1938. If it is a 9th City of London Battalion (Post Office Rifles) badge you need I may have a spare. Rather than a KRRC cross this battalion wore a Rifle Brigade style badge.

Welcome,

Just to clarify, is your query with regard to the 8th County of London Home Guard Battalion?

Default 8th COUNTY OF LONDON (islington) BATTALION, HOME GUARD WW2

8TH COUNTY OF LONDON BATTALION CAP BADGE ,Many thanks to you all. I have group photo of a the Islington Battalion Home Guard & on a couple of the personnel, although of course impossible to distinguish the logos, they are wearing identical badges to the 9th and 12th COUNTY Of London Battalions, basically its the KRRC cap badge (no wreaths or scrolls) & definitely not the 8th City of London , PO Rifles emblem, also the mislaid one from the collection was very dark in colour with a red cloth backpiece and in bakelite. Its just that I cannot recall if it was an ordinary KRRC badge or one similar to the 9th and 12th, which had the additional lettering in the centre. I'm afraid it looks very much like an intensive search in the attic, is pending. Thank you again Rob

Hello Rob,

My knowledge of Home Guard and their battalions/structure is very limited, but I can pass on the following info in the hope that is will be of some assistance:

London District was the Army Command Headquarters within the Greater London area. Once the War Office had assumed control of the Home Guard, the units raised within the Greater London area came under the responsibility of London District who created a Chain of Command structure that divided Greater London into 4 sub areas: North East, North West, South East and South West. Each sub area was further divided into zones of responsibility that broadly coincided with Metropolitan police divisions.

One or more Battalions were responsible for the security of the area covered by their zone. In addition, there were several public utility companies providing essential domestic supplies or transport networks that were allocated their own security Battalions.

‘Specialist' units of the Home Guard provided security for the London District military signals network as did smaller operational units such as the ‘Upper Thames Patrol'.

There were 135 Battalions under the control of London District; each was numbered according to the chronological order of numbering of Home Guard Battalions within the county that they were recruited. Therefore Home Guard Battalions from the Greater London area and under the control of London District are listed as follows:

Administration of Home Guard zones, groups and specialist units within Greater London by TA and AF Association

The County of London TA and AF Association, Duke of York's Headquarters, Chelsea, SW3

North East Sub Area: Zone H
South East Sub Area: Zone D, G and N
South East Sub Area: Zone L, N, P, R, Z
South West Sub Area: Zone A, B, F, V, W

Railways: LMS (London) Broad Street Station London Passenger Transport Group

Public Utility Companies:
London County Council Group
Metropolitan Water Board
Central London Electricity
Metropolitan Electric Supply Company
County of London Electrical Supply Company
South Metropolitan Gas Company
Wandsworth Gas Company

Special Units:
Associated Operators (London District Battalion)
1st American Squadron
99th County of London (Taxi) Battalion
Fisher Renwick & Co Ltd ( 1st City of London Battalion)
Middlesex Company ‘Upper Thames Patrol'
HQ London District Signal Company

The City of London TA and AF association, Finsbury Barracks, City Road EC1

North East Sub Area: Zone J, K, C and E

Railways
:
LMS (London Group) Euston Station
17th (City of London) (LNER) Battalion

Public Utility Companies:
General Post Office
Post Office London Telephone Communications Region
Post Office London Postal Region Group
Port of London Authority
Metropolitan Transport Supply Company Ltd (No. 2 City of London
Transport Battalion)

Middlesex TA and AF association, 20 Grosvenor Gardens SW1

North West Sub Area: Zone S and X

South West Sub Area: Zone V and T

Battalions located in London County, Middlesex County and the City of London:

a) City of London - 1st to 38th
b) County of London - 1st to 59th
c) Middlesex - 1st to 31st

Battalions located in Counties under London District Command

a) Essex - 51st to 55th
b) Kent - 51st to 57th
c) Surrey - 51st to 63rd

Included in Battalion titles were either the name of the town, area or public utility from where the Battalion was raised e.g. 3rd (Middlesex) Battalion, 55th (Sutton and Cheam) Battalion or 41st County of London (London Passenger Transport Board) Battalion.

Home Guard Battalion titles should not be confused with London Regiment TA units. Battalions were badged as per the County Regiment or the Territorial Army or the Territorial Army London Regiment. The Regimental cap badge issued to Home Guard units were manufactured in plastic as a war economy measure.

If there was a unit badged as per KRRC bearing a designation of 8th County of London, I should be very interested to see it. Perhaps one of the forum's HG aficionados could clear this up for us?

Regards,

JT

I have updated my link to the KRRC plastic badge:

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ctureid=105195

This is the only KRRC variant recorded in production records.

Default 8th COUNTY OF LONDON (islington) BATTALION, HOME GUARD WW2

Many thanks for the image of the KRRC standard badge, which certainly looks the same as the one I have mislaid, complete with red felt.I have been told by someone who was interested in the London Home Guard (not in this forum),not to devote too much time delving too deeply into the existence of a Home Guard version of the badge, which was affiliated to the KRRC or Rifle Brigade, as some Home Guard Battalions did not have a dedicated variant/ version of it & even if they did, problems with supply caused an availability issue - they would still have to wear the standard original KRRC/RIFLE BGDE anyway. Obviously I won't know until I can retrieve the actual mislaid badge proper to the collection, then I will find out if its a standard KRRC or a variant maybe with 8th County of London/Islington emblazoned in the centre circle or on the top of it. Unfortunately it looks increasingly likely that such a variant may not of existed and the badge was only ever a standard Kings Royal Rifle Corps one. I do regret not being able to find the badge when photographing paperwork/items, for the recipients family ,as details and images of it would have been a bonus for them. However, any more information on this subject will be very welcome. If and when I do retrieve the badge, I will let the members know and try to put a conclusion to this. Thank you again.
