RASC Book
Hi Gents,
Purchased this book to do research for a friend who`s father who served in the RASC during WW2. Inside is a ditty, as shown, and my question is; "Was this little ditty something peculiar to the RASC or logistics or perhaps something else?" Hope someone can solve this little mystery for me. Regards Kevin |

Does it refer to the signals colours of white and blue, indicating which colour worn to left / right, front / rear etc?

Found this bit of info :
"The early colour arrangement of the RASC Flag was "Blue to the Mast and White to the Blast". After 1916-1918 Palestine Campaign the colour was changed with white to the mast and blue to the blast ". .

Search took me to page about Malaysian flags but details appear relevent to British RASC.
A bit more info that may explain the quote : " In 1945 it was established that the usual practise with flags of three colours was to have the lightest colour in the center and when the stripes were vertical, the darkest colour was to the mast. In 1946 it was discovered that white in heraldry was silver and that in heraldic law "metal cannot be placed on metal" i.e. the badge of gold on white which is argentinum or silver. To overcome this problem the arrangement of the colour sequence since 1952 was gold to the mast, blue with badge defacement as it was known in heraldry and silver to the blast [i.e. fly]." As the book is about the RASC during WW2 the inscription refers to the flag that was flown at that time rather than the later (post 1952) flag. https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/my%5Earmy.html .

Nothing really to add, only to say that that's brought back a long forgotten memory - my 'uncle' (aka, family friend) Alwyne was in the RASC during the war & I can distinctly remember that book standing out amongst the more usual dark red & brown bound tomes on his bookcase. Thank you for giving the old memory banks a little prod! Kevin (another one!)

It proved very informative for my friend, his father served in Iceland, East Africa and then up to Libya. It made sense of all the photos and letters he had and he managed to put a map together tracing his fathers war from Nairobi, Italian Somaliland, British Somaliland, Eritrea and and to Libya through Egypt. A lovely old Tome, glad it dusted off the cobwebs......... Kevin |
