Mystery Canadian Military Police Badge
First the non-mysterious. Just arrived today having safely crossed the Atlantic and survived the usual Christmas Postal chaos. Very pleased to get hold of these very hard to find (in the UK at least) pieces.

Now the mystery. A crown-less badge. Obvious assumption would be that the crown has broken off or been deliberately removed.

Maybe, it was done to make a collar badge? Pure speculation.

However, having examined it closely under a magnifying glass, I can see no evidence of a break or tear.
As you'd expect with a die stamped badge, there is a slightly raised lip around the edge and this lip is complete and undamaged around the area where the crown would have been. Having compared with the complete badge, I can't see how a crown could have been broken off or deliberately removed without leaving a trace and without affecting the lip around the edge. Any ideas ? |

Hi Bill,
That was the first thought, but normally the Collar Badge for the cap badge would still have the Crown ? (Going by the other Canadian and British MP Collar badges which are simply smaller versions of the cap badge but identical in design). Its got me baffled. |

Yes, that is the usual.
Another thought, a badge for a brassard? Maybe John Cameron will have an answer.

CMPC Badges
Very nice acquisitions. All are fairly rare, even in Canada. Regarding the Crownless CMPC cap badge, I have seen a few like that and have one in my collection. They are not authorized collar badges, the proper collar badge is the letters C.M.P.C. as shown in your first pic. I tend to believe that they are simply damaged badges as the metal is very thin at the ends of the maple leaves. It is possible they serve some other purpose, maybe on a brassard as Bill says but I have never seen photographs or regulations or descriptions to confirm this. For now, I would consider it as a damaged badge but I would not either have it repaired or dispose of it. We are constantly learning new things about badges and how they were used.
