Default MPSC Collar Dogs

Does anyone have pics of GVR or GVIR MPSC Collar dogs.

I recently picked up what were supposedly GVR Collar Dogs, same as the MPSC Cap Badge but smaller, BUT with no Crown. As the EIIR Collar Dogs are smaller versions of the cap badge including crown, I wondered if these GVR pieces really are MPSC and if not, what other unit used them?

I'm not sure what the MPSC wore, but the plain Royal cipher has been used for many years as the embellishment of an ADC to the King/ Queen.

Stephen.

PS- for years I thought MPSC stood for Metropolitan Police Special Constabulary!

Apologies for the delay in responding, haven't been online for a while.

Here are the badges in question ( circled). They were bough from EBay on the "off chance" that the seller was right in describing them as MPSC though I have always been far from convinced about that.

I'd say they look like collar badges

Default MPSC Badges

As a very new member I have summoned up the nerve to post this image of my late Fathers badges. He retired as RSM of the MPSC in 1957. Hope they help. Will try to improve my abilities. Hello Andy.

Default MPSC Collar Dogs

Hello ProCoy & Army Brat,
I have photographs of the MPSC staff at the Detention Barracks at York Castle in 1919 and none wear collar dogs. Other staff (Manchester Reg?) do have collar dogs. Likewise, photos of the MPSC staff at Detention Bks at the Citadel in Cairo 1920? do not wear collar dogs, A photograph of the MPSC staff at Malta 1922 shows two sizes of GvR cap badges all with crowns. The RSM cap badge appears to be Bronze. Two Royal Marines appear to be on the staff and wear flat caps with bronze RM badges, but bright brass RM collars. some other photos look around mid-20's and show MPSC staff with collars of small GVR with Crown. These may have been at Wokingham. The RSM has bronze cap and collars. None of the photos show Officers wearing MPSC badges, but their own Regt. These photos belonged to S/Sgt H W Haffenden who left the Army in 1926. Among his badges were a pair of the larger GvR without crowns and I have seen a photo of him in uniform wearing these collars. Hope it helps. Cheers, JIm K

The 'crownless' badge was worn as a cap badge by Garrison Staff and Gymnastic Staff too.

Some of these cipher badges were commonly worn by uniformed Government employed staff as various locations. The Royal Park Keepers,(1872- 1975), for example, wore a large Crowned cipher as a cap badge and smaller crowned and uncrowned versions as collar and epaulette badges throughout their existence.
