Default Pin back wings

Hi all, I have acquired a flying officer's lot with his service and release booklet and various insignia. I have noticed in my neophyte exploration of RAF pilot wings thus far, that there are a small percentage with sewn on pins or back plates with pins attached to them incuding a beautiful wing with this particular lot that has a pin sewn on the rear. Is there a particular uniform that the pinned Wings would be used on as opposed to other uniforms? I will have pic tomorrow of the wing. Thank you for any assistance

I would assume these wings are of WW2 era.
Wings with pins or clips were often worn on operational clothing in the western desert theatre

He was stationed in the North African theater of war subsequent to earning his pilot wings as a sergeant (I have his Sgt. stripes from the standard sergeant uniform as well as the shoulder sleeve insignia Eagles). I have shoulder sleeve insignia Eagles in red which I believe are tropical uniform as well as a flying Ofc. slide on, in tropical khaki. Is there such thing as a field commission in the RAF? Also would a flying officer where the shoulder sleeve insignia Eagles? Thank you for your patience with my inexperience as I learn. So the wing that I have purchased, which should be here either tomorrow or Tuesday, would have been worn in the desert theater most likely....
