17th/21st Lancers
Can somebody advise me if this is a genuine item or a homemade mock up:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/17-21-st-L...4AAOSwPcVVwxUG I would like to buy it as a start to my collection but would like some reassurance as to its authenticity. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. |

I suspected as much, just my luck to find what I am looking for but not really! Thanks for the reply. This seller passes on a lot of ''Genuine Police caps'' that are ex MOD Police caps with any old Home Office force badge attached. Police caps I can recognise instantly if they are fake, military I have no idea at the moment. The cap looked crap but I thought the badge might be legit. I cant seem to find a bronzed officers badge anywhere.

It is a Belgian army cap, clearly marked A.B.L (in spite of the marker pen)and dated and obviously bogus.

I have seen a very similar cap with a RA badge attached. It just looked wrong, badge too high up if that makes sense. The material looked too stiff and the wrong shape also, however I put that down to age initially. It looked too new!

Sorry I forgot to add, the A.B.L. would mean nothing to me, I am completely new to military badges. Apologies if it was a stupid question. |

No worries, we all started knowing nothing!
ABL = Armee Belge - Belgisch Leger as seen in this example from my collection. The nice thing abut Belgian caps they are often cleary marked ABL and dated, with it being from 1951 in this example.

And lancers caps look like this one from my collection with regimental buttons as well as the Motto, in this case stirling silver.

Jerry thanks for sharing your examples, it's always helpful when people can explain or demonstrate why a badge or cap or whatever might not be good, very useful especially when your learning.
