Both, and sterling silver too. All depending on rank and budget.

Default para Regt collars

Theoretically none of the collar dogs should be wartime: they were not worn on battledress until post-war, and wearing Service Dress by officers was in abeyance for most of the war, other than for Staff and old codgers who owned pre-war uniforms.

13.08.41. ACI 1461:
1) Badges are being worn on service dress and battle dress garments etc, other than those authorised by War Clothing Regulations 1941, Appendix IV, notified by ACI 343 of 1941.
2) Attention is drawn to para. 15 of the above mentioned regulations. OC units will take steps to ensure that the wearing of unauthorised badges (including the peace time competition badges, which are not issuable under war conditions) is discontinued forthwith.
3) During the war no supply of collar badges will be made by RAOC. Troops who have collar badges in their possession, however, may wear them with service dress, but NOT with battle dress.

31.07.51. Ordnance List of Change C4581:
Badges, Collar. The Parachute Regiment (Cat No CB 2385).
Introduction.
The above-mentioned Badges, collar (Pattern No 13980) announced in Minor Change 2151, July 1948, are hereby formally introduced for wear by personnel of the Parachute Regiment.
The design: Outstretched wings with a parachute centralized, surmounted by the Royal Crest.

So far I have been unable to locate the list of 'Minor Change' referred to, but it indicates that collar badges were not introduced until 1948.
No metal is mentioned in the List of Change but as this is an Ordnance document I would suspect it means the WM version.

Collar badges are not included in the 1949 Priced Vocabulary so I'm unable to x-ref the CB2385 reference to identify the metal.

I hope this helps.
Stephen.

There's plenty of interesting photographs on the ParaData website showing Parachute Regiment Officers wearing collar dogs on service dress during the war:

http://www.paradata.org.uk/media/505...n=Group+photos

The above photo shows some of the Officers from the second Battalion wearing them in 1944. Not all of them are wearing them.

I was lucky enough to be given a pair of bronze Firmin collar dogs from a 13th Battalion veteran.
