Question re rank star colour backing.
Who were entitled to wear the pale / sky blue backing rank stars and crowns? Only the Parachute Regiment, or the glider landing regiments as well?

I checked Davis on this question and I can't find a clear answer. Were the South Staffs considered Army Air Corps, and thus entitled to their colour rank badges?

All members of the original, 'Army Air Corps' had this light blue backing, which included the Parachute Regiment, the GPR and the SAS.
I am fairly sure that the Small Arms School and the Education Corps also did so, but for different reasons connected with the pale blue colours of Cambridge University and the connection with learning as a concept. |

Gliderborne battalions of line infantry regiments such as the South Staffs would have worn infantry red backings and gliderborne rifle regiments such as Royal Ulster Rifles had rifle green backings.

Thanks Colin. That fits the uniform discussion that raised this question on a FB page.
