Have you researched the original owner of the cap? His service papers have survived and they reveal that he enlisted on the 20th August 1915.

Circa WWI unattached staff officers forage cap
Dating to some time after 1912 when the makers Hawkes & Co moved to their new premises at 1 Saville road, well they moved in 1911 but the cap has a date for the patent of 1912. He would have been an unattached junior staff officer from what I have read.
I bought it from the author of a book on British army officer caps in which it is shown.

Army officers Sun helmet
Another item made by Hawkes & Co. again sometime after 1911 as it lists both addresses and I have been informed that the type of liner was introduced in 1917, though the pug band looks more like one from circa 1930 and the flash has been id's as being for the S. Lancs and again dating to the same period.
In lovely condition complete with paper warning labels and two sets of makers marks. It is possible that it is an early example reused with the flash for the S. Lancs in the later period as the pug band variations can be very hard to date as both thin and thick types are seen in WWI period photographs. Note it has a leather edge trim which should only be seen on officer examples, OR's should have a cloth trim.

2 out of the collection - named items
Hi
I would like to show these 2 items from the collection which are named and have good providence ............ please enjoy. 1/ British manufactured Size 7 Brodie Pattern Helmet, Steel, Mk.I manufactured by J & J Maxfield & Sons Ltd of Sheffield in 1916. The helmet is still fitted with its original Size 7 Mk.I helmet liner and is inscribed with the service number and initials 3456 W.A.B for No.3456 Sgt William Arthur Bryant who served with Headquarters, 5th Infantry Brigade AIF on the Western Front. The helmet is marked with the green diamond colour patch of HQ 5th Inf Bde on front and rear. 2/ No 1882, PTE CHARLES STEVENSON.( Wearing cap in photo) wounded at Gallipoli and was a water carrier ,sent home as unfit end of 1915 * note his cap has no leather strip on edge of visor as most aussie issued one where. This WW2 private purchase beret and early American Paratrooper helmet both belonged to Darrel “Bucky” Harris. He was among the very first group of volunteers who were the foundation of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion.
