Default Mystery old US button

Hello all.
A friend recently found this button while metal detecting in Edmonton Alberta and it’s got us stumped.

I’m personally leaning toward pre ww1 but American gear isn’t really my specialty.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
I’ve been looking online for an approximate age but to no avail.
Any ideas?
