Default T on terriers titles.

I know officially the titles T/number/unit continued in use till late 30's do we believe that after the Great War they were a rarity. I know territorial battalions wore standard titles as the war progressed and they were not practical and frequently snagged on webbing etc.

What are the general views please.

TT

NB bought a nice T/5/RWARWICKSHIRE title at Stratford on Sunday!

The T was maintained until 1916. Up to then the TA Associations had been responsible for maintaining TA unit badges & insignia. In 1916 the War office took over all supply and standarised the badges for Regular Army, Territorial Army & 'New Army' issue. One additional reason for this may have been the number of non-TA men joining old TA battalions who objected to a 'T'. many titles can be found with the 'T' defaced into a '1' or just removed to leave a number.

The 'T' was lost until the TA reformed in 1920. Initially cloth battalion numbers were authorised but replaced by metal badges. The 'T' eventually went for good in 1940. You can still find infantry titles showing signs of the T/4/ etc having been removed: they aren't accidentally damaged!

Hope this helps, Stephen.

In the Artists Rifles both cloth and "T" metal titles were worn together from 1924 as described in this extract from the Orders book. (not good enough to scan so text follows)
6. SHOULDER TITLES
In future the metal shoulder titles "T 28 LONDON" will be worn on the shoulder strap together with the worsted title "ARTISTS" which will be worn as formerly at the top of the sleeves of the Service Dress Jackets. Authority: War Office Letter, 54/Infantry/5376 (T.A.2) dated April 15th 1924.
The Quartermaster will arrange with the O.C.H.Q. Wing and Company Commanders for the issue of these metal shoulder titles forthwith.
