DND driver early issue
Thompson refers to a first pattern DND drivers cap badge and shows it to be a single crown. Having not seen another, i think this must be over looked or mis identified as a rank crown. first and second pattern shown below

I wonder if Thompson made an error with the identification? It would be very confusing for a civilian driver to wear a crown that, at the time it was in wear, could be confused with two army ranks.

Could be the reason for the change in design

Bruce is doing some research on this area of CF insignia. Perhaps he has come across some information.

Which Thompson's book shows the crown as DND drivers? I can't find a reference to it, but I'm probably looking in the wrong place.

Hi Bruce, It is in Cap Badges & Insignia of the RCN, RCAF, and CAF. 1953-1977. Vol. 4. (The CAF is the Canadian Armed Forces). Pg 55.
This volume is rather hard to find and not many collectors have it.

I don't see any problem as long as you credit it.

Does anyone have the story on Civilian Drivers? It appears that they arrived sometime in the 1960's?
