Value of a this Royal Winnipeg Rifles collar tab?
Hi,
I posted this in the wrong forum. I have a collar tab with a left-facing devil and the phrase "Hostium Nominati" below. It has a black finish, about 75% & both lugs are intact. From what I've read, this tab was produced between 1912-1914 & replaced to correct the motto "Hosti Acie Nominati". I can't find any other information about it and can't find any for sale/sold online. Can anyone give me a ballpark value? See pics attached. |

Anyone? I've spoken to several collectors, dealers and even the RWR museum. Nobody seems to know what this is worth. All I've heard is "I've never seen that before".

Mark, value is very subjective. And, many of the Forum members prefer not to give values, as often their collective expertise has been used to provide the poster with an auction opening value or catalogue listing price.
The badge may have been worn by the 8th Bn CEF and maybe into the 1920's. The revised pattern collars were not approved until 1922 and likely not available until procured.

Just noticed. Technically, this is a 90th Winnipeg Rifles collar. The Royal honour was not granted until 1935.

Mark, The "Black Devil" pattern cap and collars were not approved until 1912. Prior to 1912 they wore a rifles type maltese cross badge. The link was to a 1912 cap badge to show a dealer's price for a cap badge. Collar badges are usually proportionally less. Phil has found an example of your collar on the same dealers site, with his asking price. The dealer suggests that this collar was worn by the 8th Bn. I believe that it was likely worn by both the militia unit and Winnipeg Rifles' CEF battalion(s).

So the purpose of the post was to establish a value for a sale. It would be preferable if you were up-front about your intentions when you initially posted. Those that don't mind giving values could proceed. Those who choose not to provide information for valuations would have been informed of the nature of the request.
