Not that this will make much difference to proceedings, but is the badge definitely 'bronzed' and not just a bit manky?

I recall that many years ago I was told that 2nd Bn. Norfolk Regiment, on adoption of the slouch hat during the 2nd Boer War, wore a bronzed version of the cap badge on the upturned brim of the hat. I also understand they were not the only ones to do so.

Thanks Hoot, that is very interesting. I have a few photos from that period that I will go through later. |

Well, I have had a look at the images that I have and there is nothing. I have looked through published images and they are teasingly distant or facing the wrong way. I can find nothing written either. The only clear image I have is of a slouch hat worn by 3VB Norfolk Regiment......Typical!
I don't suppose that you have any documentary evidence do you Hoot? |

Greetings Andy.
My daft two bobs worth. Did the Regiment serve anywhere where they would have had Mess Servants? I appreciate the badge is well made and from a good die, so not theatre made, but is this a possibility? Regards Brian. P.S. A great Norfolk collection. |

Brian, mess servants were not allowed to wear the official pattern regimental badges. They very often wore unofficial badges with designs showing which regiment they were employed by but these were of a very different style to the official regimental patterns.

Many thanks for that.
I said it was a daft two bob's worth. It's a subject I know absolutely nothing about, as evidenced by my post. I have only a couple of what I believe are such items and neither are like the official Regimental badges.................so something else learnt. Once again, many thanks. Regards Brian |
