'Gibson SG'?.. there's a few silver Liverpool Pals badges tied up there, Keith.

I bought my first Rickenbacker in Denmark Street back in the early 80s... a black 320 3/4 scale Lennon model with custom-fitted Bigsby. This was in the days when all the numpties were bowling down Oxford Street with mock Ray Bans and 'Relax' T-shirts.

I always pop my head in 'Vintage and Rare Guitars' whenever I'm passing... just to see what it's like for the other 'arf.

I loved that 320!

My Gibbo is a 1969 model with the engraved chrome tail plate and tremolo. I think Angus Young played one and I know Brian James from The Damned definently did as it's in the New Rose video. I did play a Rickenbacker once in a Denmark Street shop and it was a real joy, the one Paul Weller has. I've always wanted a Mosrite 'Johnny Ramone' model though but they're up in the 2K bracket also. I could do with his barnet as well!

Another dad from my kids' school has a season ticket for him and his son who he doesn't take to night games (yet!). Most of my matches these days are CL, League Cup and FA Cup which is no bad thing but having a season ticket holder for a friend also means he can buy extra tickets for premiership matches when I want (and can afford) them. As a result it helps him out with loyalty points for cup finals.

Got my 330 (Weller-type) a couple of years after my 320... best electric guitar I ever owned.

Cannot bear to see Townshend smash them up on stage... makes me feel ill to watch it. He favoured the Rose Morris version though, with the 'F' sound hole as opposed to the razor-slash. Weller plays one in the 'New of the World' video on top of Battersea Power Station. A thing of beauty is a joy for ever (the guitar, not The Modfather).

Have you seen Weller's SG, Keith? It's a '67, which he likes to show off on stage next to his blonde Casino (same as Lennon's Casino he used on the roof of the Apple building). Some people make you sick.

I've never paid much attention to Paul Weller, I never liked The Jam and always though him overrated. Personal opinion though, I'm sure millions will disagree. I never had a good guitar before this one, my existing was an Ibanez 'Iceman' a la Paul Stanley of Kiss! One day when I was at work my then girlfriend, now wife, took it down to a shop in Coldharbour Lane, Brixton and traded it in for the Gibson paying only £100 cash on top. The Ibanez had cost me £180 brand new. What a result, although I suppose at the time the SG would have been selling for about £500 and I don't think there was much of a market for vintage models at the time.

I've never liked seeing bands smash up their gear. I could have cried when I saw Nicky Garrett of the UK Subs smash up his SG one night at the Lyceum. By all means trash some rubbish for effect but not the tool you've made your best recordings with!

This is the same as my one and I think Weller's. I dated mine at '69 through the serial number.

Cheap at half the price. I bet you like it more now than you did back then? What do you put it through... let me guess: a 100W Marshall amp???

I had a great deal on a guitar years ago. I bought a Hofner violin bass from a bloke down in Ladywell for £200. It came with the original case (tatty as hell, but original) but the bass was, and still is, mint. Wide position pick-ups, original scratch plate with embossed 'Hofner', also with the transfer on the head-stock perfectly intact... the business. Don't know if you've ever played one, Keith, but they are so light a easy to handle. Narrow fret board, more like a guitar than a bass. I gave it to my Dad one year for his birthday; one of the best guitar investments I've made. They go for over two grand now, but you can understand why. They're lovely instruments.

Always liked the SG, it is a 'serious' guitar with tons of charisma. I can think of only one SG patron who never really exploited this characteristic of the SG, and that is Robbie Krieger. A great musician from an iconic band, who kind of turned his back on the SG's sexiness and allowed its more sensitive and subtle side to come through. Just goes to prove what a great guitar it really is, versatile and enduring.

Talking of Gibsons... I remember the first time I ever picked up a Les Paul; I couldn't believe how heavy the thing was. It played okay, but ever since, I have never really been in love with them. That's not to say I would turn one down if it was going cheap!

Sorry to continue on this off Forum subject but why did I ever get rid of my blonde Hofner President with black plastic pickups.

I virtually gave it away in the 1970`s

I have had a number of guitars over the years ( and still have a few ) but the one with the best action I have had is a modern ( made in China ) Squire Stratocaster which I bought last year at a car boot sale ( while looking for militaria I have to say ) for £30.

I love Hofners... got a couple of cherry red 'Very Thins' with the mother of pearl inlays on the fingerboard. The necks are just a tiny bit wide, but quite flat with a nice smooth action. Great vintage guitars and a real pleasure to play, unplugged or through an amp.

I sympathise with you about letting that 'President' go... didn't George Harrison play one in the Quarrymen days?

One of my friends had a verithin of which I was most envious, they certainly looked the part.

Not sure about George playing a President,certainly one of the Beatles ( John ?) played a Hofner Club at one time.

Am I the only Bass player on here then? Am I the only goalkeeper amoungst you football players! I'm looking at my Hohner Jack Custom headless bass sat in the corner on it's stand as we speak.
