Irish Guards lot
Hi all just had this arrive and have loads of questions about them! On the main, authenticity! Does the Shoulder Title look fine?
On the Pipers badge, Horizontal and Verticle lines, so early pattern have compared to one I have and Script similar though rear on this is cleaner, another I own is a later type only Horizontal line and Script is different. One lug has feet but can't see how it couldn't have to be fixed onto badge other is as would expect? Confused! (Could be a copy would appreciate your thoughts)! Officers Cap badge is new to me in the Star design? Flat & sparkles, but rear looks good! Would appreciate confirmation and era? This is a lot different to others I have, and I like this as it has the Enamel intact! - at least! if good a badge without enamelled broken in some slight way!! The cloth badge, I would like to be for Beret but assume its a Collar? could some kind sole elaborate and again is this identifiable to a particular time period? The Rank Pip is straight forward enough, but one of the Q/C buttons is Silver rather than Gold coulouring, presumably for Mess Waiter? At last an example for O/R Shoulder rear fixing lugs are Hexagonal, have this size star with lugs (collar) finally acquired this one. Lastly the O/R cap badge looks to be New Metal, type? Newish at any rate. Many thanks Billy |

I was watching this lot, to be honest i forgot to bid on it. I believe all of it is genuine, just some modern pieces that's all.

Billy the embroidered star is an officer's pip. The silver staybrite button is for piper's. The small stars are part of the shoulder title, never worn as collar badges.

Hi Andy have done that myself more than once! Danny thanks for the info, so all my lugged small stars are for Shoulder Titles, had them as collars!! mainly because lugs where not Hexagonal. Is the Pipers fine?
The Officers? Any ideas on use? |

Billy,
the others have largely answered your questions. The gold rank star is for, NO. 1 dress. The Full Dress Rank Star (silver wire) was used from 1981 as beret badge to prevent loss or damage to the service dress cap star which had been used previously until replaced by a bespoke deign. Source ; Col W.W. Mahon, The Irish Guards Star Part II, The Irish Guards Journal 1987, p 42. The officers forage cap star, the cut of the star whether diamond or cross -cut etc has no real significance with patterns appearing and disappearing without any logic. The most I could guess for this one is anytime from the 1950's to 1990's. You will find dozens of slightly different designs of this badge. The piper's star is unusual. It has the design that is consistent with earlier pre-war stars Note that It has the type of crown resembling the Queen Victoria Crown. There are two lines joining the crowns and the shamrock is "seeded", yet looks chromed. Is yours chromed or white metal? lastly, remember that the Irish Guards wear shamrocks in the collar with the exception of Officer's mess dress so all of these small stars are part of the shoulder title. Thanks John Pipers is white metal and not Chrome, will have to check - just to make sure!! and as you mention the Shamrocks can visualise the white on collars now! Just see the size of the small stars and associated with collars! Being a numpty! Cheers billy
