Thanks Mike. Do you know the time period for the post war for the embroidered titles? (That is a tough question, but sometimes the information is out there.)

Hi Bill,
My best estimate is the first embroidered is a late 1940's to early 1950's style and the second is a late 1950's to early 1960's style. There are so few samples to compare them to...in fact when I visited the Chaudiere Museum this Summer they had the first embroidered one I have as one of the Shoulder Titles on Display for the Second World War Period. I will post up some pictures I took at the Museum of their Titles...just have to resize them. Best, Mike |

Chaudiere Museum- Examples of Shoulder Titles
Hi Bill,
Here are some pictures I took at the Museum this summer. The first 3 are of the Various Shoulder Titles they have on display with the date of use. The fourth one is on the Tunic they have on display...it has some kind of Orange border around it..not seen that before. The last 2 are actually on a display at the War Museum in Ottawa...it is supposed to represent what a Canadian Infantry Soldier looked like on D-Day...absent are the 3rd Div Formation Patch Best, Mike |

Le Régiment de la Chaudière set of badges worn on DDay
Hello Mike and Folks,
These patches and cloth titles (right and left arms are identical) were worn at Bernieres-sur-Mer on DDay. I got them in the 70s when I was a young boy from a good school chap. His father was 10 years old in August 1944 and collected a full biscuit tin box of badges from Canadien soldiers in rest at Bernieres! Unfortunatly I lost contact with him for long time and I don't know what the tin box has become... Cheers. J-F |

Nice examples of the printed title. This evidence would indicate that the Chaudière wore the printed and not the embroidered title at the time of Normandy.

Chaudiere Officer on D-Day
Hi Bill,
I am not sure if all the Regiment was Consistently wearing the same Shoulder Titles or not. The first three pictures are on a display at the Chaudiere Museum depicting a D-Day Chaudiere Officer as he would have appeared. He is wearing the Embroidered Titles and not the Printed Canvas. It would appear there is a tremendous diversity that exists with the Regiment in what they had and wore. Picture four is of what looks like a variant of a Dennison Smock with a photograph of the Lieutenant who wore it during the war attached to it. I am not sure if there is photographic evidence of other Infantry Regiments who wore a Dennison Smock type outerwear or not other than 1 Can Para. Perhaps the Chaudiere did not have as strick an adherence to Dress Orders. Certainly when you see all the variants of items out there it is difficult to identify some items as authentic versus reproductions. Best, Mike

Interesting to note what appears to be an osd Chaud's cap badge on the officer in the last image.
Mike, You are right about establishing exactly what was worn, and when. Even when the printed titles were issue, many regiments were using up embroidered, or acquiring embroidered ones for walking out bd. Photos are some of the best information. Museums are okay, but depending on the curator, can be authoritative sources for research, or can completely misinform. |

Some New Aquisitions
Hi Bill et al.,
Here is some samples of recently purchased Chaudiere Shoulder Titles. Pictures 1 and 2 are Excellent Samples of a Shoulder Title variant worn on D-Day. Pictures 3 and 4 are British Made Titles...unsure of date. Pictures 5 and 6 are Repo's/Replica's of pics 1 and 2. The back is made of similar material to the Canvas Titles. The Stitching glows under black light...thankfully this e-bay mistake did not cost me much! I included it because the front is actually well done and has many similarities to the originals... until you have it in your hand.

Few More
Picture 1 and 2 are of unknown vintage and origin. They do not glow under black light. Any information on them would be much appreciated.
Picture 3 and 4 is a Scully marked Officer's Cast Badge...there is a collar to this as well. A big thanks to Dwayne H. who parted with all the ORIGINAL items that have posted here today. Mike

Awesome Titles
Hi BIll,
Very nice collection...I am in total envy. I will take a stab at these: First Set: 1. Second World War Canvas in great condition 2. Second World War - British Made- Chain Stitching...nice piece 3. Looks like one of the ones I posted today..does it have the White Cloth backing? 4. Looks post war...late 40's? Second Set: 1. Second World War - The D-Day variant title 2. Second World War - Awesome only seen 1 other before 3. DITTO 4. Not Sure but it sure is one big title 5. White Lettering is quite vibrant...does it glow under black light? It sort of resembles the Repo title I posted earlier today. Nice piece in great condition if it does not. I can kind of make out the words to the side... ithetic aterial > with an arrow pointing to the title??? Anyways these were my best estimates...I certainly am no expert! I included a front and back of another set that I have...they are definitely well past the post war period (60's-70's I assume) Best, Mike P.S. If you ever have an occasion to want to part with these pieces....please let me know.

Quote:
Mike your opinions are almost exactly what I thought. One significant difference. The second title is the title that the unit acquired in Canada before proceeding overseas. (This raises the question about the styles of manufacture, and I have seen many samples submitted for sealed patterns at archives. The style of manufacture for some was what we collectors call Brit, but the item was submitted by a Canadian maker!) Number 3 does have the white cotton backing. And No 4 is a post war example. The second image, bottom title is a synthetic backing material. The title was one issued in the 1990's. One of the puzzles of collecting cloth is the number of titles for units. Some units seem to have countless patterns and others only one or two. For example the North Shore Regiment must have more than a dozen distinct patterns and the Queen's York Rangers only one that I have found. |
