Adam,

I did indeed mean the glengarry badge.

What I'm looking for is the differences between the badge i.e ear differences on the boar's head or eyes or....

Gentlemen:

I am still in search of images of the version of the 1881-pattern helmet plate, and also collar badges, which would have been worn by the 5th Battalion following their 1884 redesignation as the Royal Scots of Canada - preferably officer's pattern.

So far, the only image of any sort that I have been able to locate which shows much of either item is R.J. Marrion's rendering of a circa 1891 officer in full dress, in "Military Uniforms of Canada, 1665-1970". Unfortunately, I am not at all sure how accurate this depiction is .... nor is the detail very good.

For those not familiar with this painting, a small version of the plate is shown below, with cropped details of the helmet plate and collar badge.

Is anyone able to help with photographs or other images of either of these items?

John,

One of these days I'll get around to cataloging them...but in the meantime if you have one that you want to compare just let me know.

The most noticeable differences are the metal type, the font of the lettering in the scroll (particularly the "O"), the thickness of the metal (in the struck examples), and the lugs.

As a general rule, I feel the thinner strikings represent the earlier pieces.

Hi To all, I`ve taken some Notes, I will be at the Regiment next week.
I will check the Museum and see and take pictures.

Now I have a question I thought

NEMO ME INPUNE LACESSIT= No one provokes me with impunity.
is the motto of the Order of the Thistle, and means
"No one (Harms, wounds, hurts, provokes) me with impunity."
was exclusively to the Black Watch.

But I see It's not, few other regiments have that on there badges. Why ?

Like the Motto for these Regiments is exclusive Just to them.

Per Terra et Mare = By Land and Sea. 1st Marine Corps

Semper Fidelis= Always Faithful. Is the US Marine Corps

Ex Coelis = Out Of The Clouds. Is CDN Airborne

Thank you for your time

Hi Adam,
Have just been admiring your fine collection of Boars head badges.
I have scanned mine for comparison and would be grateful if you would date it, thanks. It is 67x51mm.
Regards, Tinto

Hi Tinto,

I will have a look at mine and some of my notes and compare these with your badge when I get on the computer from home.

Dating these is far from an exact science but hopefully I can narrow it down for you a bit.

Cheers,

Adam

Can you advise what period this badge is from, and what sort of head-dress it would have been worn on?
This is a pre 1908 Royal Scots Volunteer battalion bonnet badge. The VBs were the forerunners of the Territorial Force who were formed in 1908 when the Reserves were reorgnaised. If genuine it is a desirable badge.

Tinto,

From what I can tell I would place your Glengarry badge as being struck in the 1900-1910ish period. This is an educated guess!

MR Adam I have more pictures I just posted 6 for
now since I'm not allowed to use a Flash few came out bad,
Will go back on Tuesday to take more.

I can assure you Mr Adam If it's some of your donations they're greatly appreciated and are kept under lock
and key and displayed.

Maybe you can help with my request so I can take the pictures of the Back and front with out having to take them through
a glass case to be posted on this thread for future reference.

I also contacted the Stuart Museum, Since now there closed for renovation till 2010 I've been told. They also have a
big collection and many of the old Wear, Badges of the 1800+++.

Please not on the picture with the two badges the right one was hit by shrapnel. The right bottom corner It's indented
and a Hole right through the badge. If you check the left top of the badge you notice it's bent and indented.
