Hi Iain, the badge in question is Light Infantry, but could have been used by any Light Infantry unit in the British Empire. I was hoping to get confirmation in the form of a DLI photograph showing the badge being worn. There are many badges that were worn by more than 1 unit, and I like to positively place it, where ever possible. Regards Andrew

Guys
I have seen "somewhere" DLI troops during the Anglo Boer War wearing side caps/hats and therefore they would have been wearing some type of smaller badge, definately not a helmet badge. I will endeavour to find the picture and hopefully it will shed some light on the topic in question. Brian |

Here is a full DLI cross belt. We normally collect the significant badge, but the belt holds other bits & pieces which I suppose aren't all that collectible. THr full belt is rather awkward to display ( and photograph ) but it would be vandalism to break it up.

Mike, this is cool. It is nice to see the whole piece together like that. Andrew

That sounds great Brian. Mike, I have seen the belt plate/pouch badge with both lugs and screws on. Which does yours have? I am curious if it was also maybe worn on the helmet. I am sure that it would have screws on a pouch. Regards Andrew

My Durban LI badge, 1902 - 1919, has a red baize backing, does anyone know the significance of this?
regards, Iain

I have been chatting to some old time collectors and it appears that it wasn't worn on the helmet. There were 2 different production runs. 1 lugged and 1 with screws. Regards Andrew

DLI/RDLI Shoulder devices
Posting a few of the items I have in my collection.
The Student Officer (Candidate Officer) shoulder titles are rare with DLI backing colours. I am unable to make out the makers details clearly on the RDLI Brass title, but suspect it is Firmin, however the London part is quite clear and hope someone can clear this up? DLI Officers dress cap
DLI Officers dress cap with removable white cover, this version with modern white metal cap badge was worn from +- 1961.
I will endeavour to find out if it is still worn or when it was done away with? A nice group photo of officers wearing these, appears in the official history of the DLI taken around 1969. |

DLI Buttons
A number of buttons worn over time by the unit, strangely very few have the DLI badge and the chromed version has a rather strange crown/castle and anchor combo. All these were given to me by the Quarter master when I did some time there during my NS in the late 1970's.
