Default 13th Light Horse A.I.F. Unofficial "Dancing Devil" hat and collar badge

13th Light Horse A.I.F. Unofficial "Dancing Devil" hat and collar badge.

This hat badge was made in both Egypt and by Tip Taft in the UK. There are also many reproductions of the hat badge in existence.

Hi Mick,

Ref: Collar

I am unsure about this and it is certainly too crude to be the work of Tiptaft. Note the design is different to yours. Badge is die struck and painted. Badge has short D lugs. This only cost 3 pounds so it doesnt matter if its a fake. The very same badge made 27 on eBay.

Ref:collar, noted differences

1. The trident on your collar is not joined to the wreath.
2. The devil is looking to the right instead of straight ahead
3. The end of the wreath to the left is voided.
4. There appears to more hair on the head of my devil.

I found my badge on a badge board with some indian badges, it had not been identified correctly by the dealer.

Mick, perhaps both are good but I dont know.

I have seen quite a few variations in the Dancing Devil collars - I'll see if I can also find more pictures of them.

Thanks Mick. I realise the cap badge has been reproduced, any word on the collars?

I'm really not sure - I know there exist plenty of fake hat badges but an not sure about collars. I'll ask around and see what I can find out.

Hi Mick,
Nice badges - I have 2x devil hat badges & 1x collar badge. My collar badge is marked to the back with what appears to be: Johnnie Morgan - since there was a John Morgan in the 13th Light Horse I am assuming that the collar is marked with the owners name, have you seen this type of thing before????? or I could be barking up the wrong tree......
Regards
Gary

Hi Gary,

This is the first I have ever heard of any soldier having a name on the back of his badges.

im still interested to see anything that would indicate these badges were produced by "tiptaft"

Looks like I was barking up the wrong tree...... There was a tailor in Melbourne: Morgan Kenny trading as Johnny Morgan (spelling from the newspaper article) that went to court in 1916 & 1917 for selling badges of the defence forces without written authority. So maybe my collar badge with Johnnie Morgan is one of his.

Regards
Gary

hi gary
any chance we can see a pic of the back of the Johnnie Morgan badge? ive never seen a maker marked version of this badge

why does anyone think that Tiptaft made these badges. are there any badges out there with Tiptaft marks? i have seen many of these badges and none had the quality you would expect of a Tiptaft badge.

there are so many variations in these badges especially the ones that were supposedly made/cast in egypt. who knows which ones are good or not. almost worth buying and collecting all the varieties. chances are you will get a good one sooner or later. you just wont know which one it is.
