Default Poppies

A fantastic post BWEF. Many thanks. Please can you point me in the direction of the correct badge to put on the card, as I will be required to produce that.

Many thanks,

John

Hi John

Pleased you found it of interest.

Between the wars the spelling of the motto on the GS badge that is not in English changed from Dutch to Afrikaans.

I think I have this the right way round, but somebody will correct me if not. I think the Dutch is "Eendracht Maakt Macht" and the Afrikaans is "Eendrag Maak Mag."

Here is a WW1 South African GS cap badge.

Default ss Mendi memorial

Thank you, that is absolutely super, and I now know what to do.

I am co-founder of a local historical society, and my colleauge, when talking to a Royal British Legion man was informed there is no mark of remembrance placed on the memorial for the men of South Africa who lost thier lives when the ss Mendi went down off the Isle of Wight in 1917. I can assure you that as from this year there will be, and I am glad I have had a part in that - due to your help. My sincere thanks.

I will post a photograph of it next November.

John

I have attended some of the official commemorative parades at Delville Wood in France during my previous career and I have laid official poppy wreaths at both the cemetary and memorial.

A seperate ceremony was also held at the Arq La Bataille cemetary close to Dieppe where members of the South African Labour Corps are buried.

The poppy is the symbol of the South African sacrifices made in ww1 and is therefore correct.

I would greatly appreciate the date/s that the ceremony will be held as I will be in the United Kingdom on various business trips in 2011.

Sabrigade. You have moved this into a great new dimension.
Andrew (Traist) has given me the Afrikaans wording for the inscription, so we can be twee taalag (? spelling), and I was thinking about how we can make this something special - making contact with the people who look after the memorial in SOWETO, having somebody special to lay that wreath....I don't know......just making it something special.....I just don't like to feel those guys will be left out again......they are ours.

Thanks to all for the magnificent encouragement you have given me, and Sabrigade, I will PM you and keep you in touch..

Regards,

John

Default SA records

BWEF, you were asking for somewhere on line to find out about WWI SA soldiers: you could try this link:

Hope it helps, best of luck, Iain
