Default Unidentified regiment / period

Does anybody have any idea which regiment the soldier in the photograph belongs to? By the musket he's holding I think the period may be Victorian.

The photo dates 1880's to 1890's, probably c. 1885. He is a private in a Volunteer Infantry Battalion, or its pre decessor a Rifle Volunteer Corps.

I cannot see any badge sufficiently to ID it.

Default Volunteer?

From the centre of the helmet plate it looks like a bugle in the middle, as Simon said a Volunteer Infantry Battalion, or its predecessor a Rifle Volunteer Corps.

A photographers name and address would probably be a help.

I think the star on the sleeve confirms Volunteer.
One star for five years passed as 'Efficient'.

Plus the sleeve lace and the shooting badge.

It would help immensely if your image could be scanned rather than photographed. Just a thought.

Cheers,
Dan.

As its already on photographic paper rather than as a Cabinet Photo it appears to be a copy of an original already, so wouldnt get any clearer.
