Somaliland Scouts
Every now and again eBay turns up a sleeping gem like this.
Somaliland Scouts officers' silver badge by Gaunts. Face is absolutely mint, not a scratch on the mirror like S. Copper slider an interesting curve and apparently as issued. Sorry about the first photo - hard to photograph something so shiny! Enjoy. Eddie PS - Anybody got some matching collars spare? |

Sorry to rain on your parade, but the J.R.GAUNT B'HAM makers mark dates from the mid 1960's, and is frequently seen on restrikes.
The Somaliland Scouts were handed over to the Somali government in 1960. Did they continue to wear this K/C badge well into the sixties? Apart from that, what is an OR's slider doing on an officers badge? Rgds, Thomas. |

Interesting - point taken over the Gaunt thing - however this is definitely a silver badge and the quality is way way better than any copy I've ever seen.

Why not post this badge, or a link, in the restrikes and fakes section of the forum as well, I'd be interested in more opinions on this one.

Well that would imply that I think it's "suspect" in some way and - having compared it with a large collection of Somaliland Scouts material locally - I don't.
Shoert answer for ORISKANY: Yes it does - period not certain. Eddie Last edited by Eddie Parks; 28-01-12 at 03:30 PM. |

I don't have any Somaliland Scouts badge knowledge, so who am I to say it is suspect. It is however an interesting badge as it might set the accepted J.R. GAUNT B'HAM date of mid 1966 back quite a few years, and not very many silver badges are seen with brass sliders.

Titles made in that style imply that they were to be worn on BD as opposed to a hot weather uniform. So could these have been made up for a Somaliland contingent in a 1946 Victory Parade in London? Or for wear by Local Engaged Somalis in Pioneer Companies - in BD in the Egyptian winter for example?
