Hopefully this helps, it’s taken from the booklet Uniform Buttons of the UK Royal Family by Tim Burt

Could possibly be an inaccurate description because the “crown” is actually a coronet worn by an Earl on State occasions

Take care when referring to anything published by this guy Burt (based in Canada). He has produced several allegedly accurate books/booklets relating to UK police insignia dealing with police collar badges and other police related insignia. Apart from the fact that they are very expensive, the one I've seen contains so much inaccurate information and identification of the items he illustrates to be little short of a joke. Don't get me wrong, the man who never produced a book never made a mistake - but this one publication of his which I've had sight of contains so much that is wrong, its an insult to any collector who is daft enough to buy it. That said, he's probably a nice guy!

Just to back up Dave's comments about Burt's button books. His one on Royal Navy buttons is also totally inaccurate. Many of his descriptions of buttons were little better than guesses - and they were not rare or unusual items either. I e-mailed him with a list of correct identifications and his reply was far from polite! As Dave said, it's easy to criticise someone who has actually attempted to produce such a work when you haven't done so yourself, but I strongly advise button collectors to put no faith in his descriptions or identifications.

Pete

My identification was based on a King's crown example in British Buttons, Civilian Uniform Buttons 19th-20th Century by Dennis G. Blair, and an article in the Bulletin of the Military Historical Society by William T. Tate, May 1970. I've not come across any of Mr Burt's books.

David.
