Default 1770 Sgt Ernest H Green. 7th London Regiment.

350 Sgt Edward H Green. 7th London Regiment. He appears to be wearing a coloured horizontal strip above his chevrons; and cloth 7th London shoulder titles.

Is there a stitched brigade patch above the stripe? In one pic it looks like a diamond but in another more like a spade.

I was thinking circular, perhaps flat across the bottom?

I too see a diamond shape.
He's also wearing Regimental buttons, not the normal GS buttons.

According to "British Battle Insignia (1): 1914 - 18" by Mike Chappell, 47th (2nd London) Division battle patches were card suits in yellow, green and red, the shape of symbol designating battalion with the brigades designated by colour.

1/7th Bn, the London Regiment was in the senior Brigade of the division 140th (4th London) Brigade from November 1914 - February 1918.

So a yellow diamond above a strip of another colour that's sitting on the stripes?

I completely missed that, but on looking through an eyepiece there is clearly a diamond in both photographs.

It is also possible there there is something printed/embroidered on the vertical strip. However, my eyesight isn't as good as it once was and I am not completely sure.

I no longer have access to a photo editor so I cannot play around with the contrast and brightness as I used to be able to do.

Thank you for the link. I have a photocopy in my London Regiment file that shows an earlier attempt to list the cloth badges worn ny the various battalions of the London Regiment which I will dig out.

I see the diamonds now - I kept quiet when first viewing the images as I thought the diamond was a circle but just wasn't sure.
I think the horizontal strip is plain with no lettering.

I am not sure where these notes came from or who compiled them but I have had them about 20 years. They cover every battalion of the London Regiment.

I would say yellow diamond, and the strip is a company colour.
Have you noticed the Regimental buttons, not GS buttons?

High Wood- post 12 - re the hand-written notes - those are/were my notes made in the late 1980's from examining all of the battalion marks in the IWM insignia collection. The notes were photocopied and kept in the old Department of Exhibits & Firearms at the IWM as departmental reference. I don't know when the traces of the shapes were made but presumably they are from actual example in the collection. The company colour strips worn below the battalion mark were A - Blue, B-Green, C - Red, and
D - Yellow, and were constant throughout the whole 47th Division, they were adopted in May 1917.

Mike

Interesting seeing a sidearm on walking out.

A privilege some regiments allowed SNCOs only.

I cannot find my notes but believe Foot Guards and some others.

Possibly a general proviso in KRs even.
