Default 6th BN DLI?
Looking through some albums on here the DLI badge I have had for a while is identical to the blackened 6th BN badges illustrated. I had just assumed it was age related dirt but on closer inspection it appears to my non expert eye as blackened. Can any one please confirm either way.

The slider does appear to have been blackened, but the badge needs a scrub to see if anything remains under the gunk. I always recommend a good cleaning to all badges as one never knows what is under the dirt and corrosion, plus it preserves them from further degradation.

Thanks both, I'm pretty happy it is blackened brass and looks very similar to the illustrated one above, plus others I have viewed on peoples albums.

That badge appears to be white metal under the grime. If it is then it is not 6th DLI.

There is no grime. The badge has been cleaned with soapy water and a stiff nylon brush. It remains black.

John, simple question, is the badge blackened gilding metal or blackened white metal?.

The badge is blackened white metal. My mistake. Did regular battalions blacken their badges at all at any time or did the 6th Bn use up some standard badges, in wartime say? The badge has definitely been blackened, the colour won't come off and it is a genuine badge.

It is certainly not a standard production 6th DLI badge. I suppose the factory could have blackened some white metal ones to meet a shortfall of 6th DLI ones but that's unlikely. Anyway, your badge appears to be well polished at the high points so it has not been blackened from new. I think it was done by a collector to represent a 6th DLI badge.

Here is the cap badge that belonged to Pte Nelson Muschamp 6th DLI. Also his dirty white metal badge.
