I have examples of both Chrome & Nickle plated badges in my collection, and also contribute to the 'Armoured Brigade' theory, where attached units badges were plated by the workshops for wear within the Brigade.
Post WWI I know that at least the RAOC Band wore chromed badges with Service Dress and these were done by the RAOC Workshops at Hilsea (then the RAOC Depot) I have one example of a 1918 Pattern RAOC Badge that was chromed for use with an Armoured Brigade OFP in Africa, again produced by the RAOC OFP Workshop pre 1942 and REME (All the RAOC Workshops rebadged to REME) The Nickle Plated RAOC & RASC badges I have were Militia Reserves worn upto the time of the BEF and were replaced after Dunkirk with standard badges. I also agree that the post war screw threaded chromed badges in the same size of cap badges were mostly for car badges. But as I always say exceptions to rules always apply! I have a QC RAOC badge (with slider) chromed for use by the RAOC TA Pipe Bands in the 1960's and with bolts for use in a Plaid Brooch & Large Pipers Belt Buckle. |

The Old "Chromed" Road again......
I'm sure we went down this road last year, with the same varied responses..... IMO the reasons are varied, a lot of Corps badges that have been chromed and still retain their original fixing method were highly likely to have been because the original owner was attached to a RAC unit. Those that have replacment fittings, pins, brooch clasps etc are more than likely for sweetheart or old comrades usage. The Band theory although not universal has evidence to support it! I have a "Kings Own" (Lancaster) badge which is lugged and chromed which I bought as a "Tank" or "Armoured" Battalion badge, although I cannot which recall which Bn? Can anyone help?

Chrome KC RAPC cap badge
Saw this thread today: here is a chromed RAPC cap badge I picked up in a lot a couple of years ago, with the remains of a brown/yellow coating on the crown and lion (paint?). presumably as they would normally have been in brass.
Hope it is of interest Graham
