Young Turks-C.U.P.medal?
Hello all
The photos show what I believe to be a Turkish medal from the period of the "young Turk revolution".I purchased it in a lot of Lancs badges. It carries the Islamic calendar date of 1324 which I think is AD 1906 and ties in to the Committee of Union and Progress which when formed in 1889 was a secret organisation in the Ottoman empire.By 1906 this organisation was politicised by the Young Turk officer class. A friend of mine who is an arabic specialist says the script on the medal is a mix of Arabic and Turkish and roughly translated reads Justice ,Equality and brotherhood. It is the size of a 2 pence piece and is aluminium? The Young Turks were apparently well educated and studied theology with a leaning to the theories of positivism. Many were however jailed and/or executed at the end of WW1.Academics and empire a seemingly bad mix. Any info, thoughts on originality/copies good or bad will be welcome. Cheers-Dave |
