“United Kingdom Support Command Germany” ‘challenge coin’ - market value?
Good evening
Some years ago a friend was presented with this whilst serving in Germany. He is now thinking of getting rid of it so can anyone suggest a realistic price for it please? It measures 50mm in diameter, Thanks Graham

I have a collection of hundreds of challenge coins. Originally an American idea, recently more and more UK units have adopted them. Medallions, awarded by usually the CO of a unit for some specific act (such as the CO of 2 Para who awarded some for acts of gallantry on HERRICK 13) are also about.
Value depends obviously on unit, age, condition, desireability etc. I have bought lots for 99p off ebay. £5 is acceptable, but I've paid £10 each for Royal Marine, Bomb Disposal or AAC coins. At the top end of the scale are the Special Forces coins and I've paid £25 each for SAS squadron or SBS coins. PM me if you'd like £7.50 for this example (as I haven't got one) Ian H |

Incidentally, the only other 'loony' I've met who collected challenge coins was Roy Turner, who stimulated my interest with a series of articles in the 80's in Chute and Dagger, the SF collectors club magazine. I've had problems getting rid of my spares as collectors are so thin on the ground in the UK.
Are there any more coin loonies on here? Thanks to the individual who contacted me with another coin as well. PM sent. Ian H |

Hi Ian / Graham,
I have about 60 coins in my collection. Like you, I've payed anything from a pound to around ten pounds for one but mostly I have been given them at work (I work in a NATO HQ). We have our own in our HQ too, designed by me You're not the only loonie out there lol Regards Bill

£5 to £10 sounds about right.
I only collect coins related to Bomb Disposal, EOD & RLC myself including casino chips |

I agree depends on what unit they are are for. I collect ones to Aussie SF's who served in Afghanistan.
There is one that's on ebay at the moment to 6 Troop Bravo Sqn SOER (Special Operations Engineer Regiment). They are attached to SASR and 2 Commando in Afghanistan. These seldom appear on the market. I don't have anything to do with this sale, I just thought I would point it out. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121275599545...84.m1423.l2649 SOER-CC_01_smaller.jpg |

Wonder how much mine from the United States Director of National Intelligence is worth then And yes, he gave it to me personally.

Its value depends on the built in tracking device. Live ones are considered a hazard and are worth less.

My friend thanks you for your interest but has decided to hang on to it for the time being. Best Graham
