Smile RE's or Colonial

I am in the process of sorting out my RE badges and would be interested to find out if this little badge is the F/S badge of the 1st Northamptonshire Engineer Volunteers or a badge from Africa probably Rhodesia.

It came with a large collection of British and Colonial badge in a box, so it could be either, all help appreciated.

Slightly different to the one you show but is it effectively the same badge?
Of yellow metal, about 35mm X about 23mm, I picked it up along with another badge and suspected that they were perhaps both New Zealand items.

Hi Rob and Leigh,
I don't recognize this lion as a New Zealand badge but could be wrong.
There's a slight resemblance to the Waipu Mounted Rifles badges, see attached.

Thanks, that's probably the badge that made me think of NZ.

Default RE?

Having been a collector of RE badges for many years, I was hoping someone could confirm this as Northants Volunteers, I have seen a similar badge which was African, but thanks for the replies.

Not NZ for sure, it may be Durban Boys College. I have a similar WM badge with a half wreath.

Your rampant lion badge is for the South African Murchison School Cadets worn early 1900s. Each school had their own individual badge in the 1890s - early 1900s until a single one was brought out for general wear by all school cadet units. Have attached the one I have in the collection for comparison. These early school cadet badges are now rather scarce.

Cool Murchison School Cadets

Many thanks for your help in identifying the Murchison School Cadets as this badge came with a lot of Rhodesian badges I would say this is what it is.

It is very similar if not identical to the 1st Northamptonshire Engineers.

Regards Rob
