Default 4th Queen's Own Hussars - Be Careful when these re-surface!

4th Queen's Own Hussars - Be Careful when these re-surface

, as I'm pretty sure both the QVC and KC 4H badges are nearly as modern as the QC 15/19th next to them!!

The font is wrong (short stubby lettering), the seeding rear of the circlet is not fine enough and there's very little depth to them, unlike the real thing (images attached)!

The three Essex Regt badges look nice however!

Andy

I would personally agree with your assessment too, Andy.

In fact, I purchased an example - from eBay months ago - to compare with the two original examples I have; the ''fake'' is the far left example in the trio pic.

My apologies for the hasty comparison picture, but I will attempt to take better pictures over the weekend - I can even post it off to you Andy if you wish to study it.

Plus, I also have the already known Victorian fake example of a type that I purchased some twenty-odd years ago, you can thus see the size and detail differences in this version.

Best,

Marcus

I'm not so sure the font is the main reason these badges are dubious, what I can see is that both badges appear to be from the same main die for the circular section and then pressed with a second crown die depending on what version is being made. I've seen QVC and KC 13th Hussars done similarly.

Attached is mine, although the lettering is similar to those in question note the crown doesn't curve at the cushion to match the contour of the circle, rather it sits higher like Andy's.

The gilding metal is perfect for the period, no faker has yet got that right and the nickel insert is braised neatly and bulges at the front.

These are the further pictures of the ''fake'' example that I own, and in my opinion a match to the example that initiated this thread.

Please feel free to use any of these images.

Best,

Marcus
