KE VII RE badge
Hi all,
I was so pleased when I picked up this King Edward VII RE badge from an Internet site, only when it arrived did I notice that a nice neat rectangular hole had been punched through the bottom of the garter. Obviously with the slider behind it wasnt too noticeable. ILH 007.jpg Does anyone know why someone would do this to such a nice badge. Is it something Royal Engineers do perhaps? Iain

Iain, would guess it is a Militia? badge, have seen these EviiR badges with a small White Metal M just where your badge has the rectangular void, this could be the sweat hole for the M.
Cheers Tony.

Hi Tony,
that's very interesting. I did think with such a neat hole, there may be a reason for it. Does anyone perhaps, have an example they could post? Thanks, Iain

Hi Jerry,
thanks, it looks about right. I never knew RE Militia existed but googling earlier it came up with Royal Monmouthshire RE Militia and also Anglesea RE Militia having been in the 2nd Boer war. It did show a recent Monmouth badge; would they have worn the same badge at one time? regards, Iain

Originally a militia (infantry) unit charged with home defence, if became an Engineer unit in 1877 and a Royal Engineer unit in 1896. From 1896 it is also became the only regiment with two "Royals" in it's title and is the only Royal Engineer unit whose members wear the Prince of Wales Division cap badge and the militia flash instead of a Brigade affiliation.

Hi Jerry,
sorry I didnt mean for you to go to a lot of trouble. I didnt even think to look in K&K, it is so user unfriendly, I tend to google more. I've just checked K&K now; its number 1944. It doesnt give dates for when the RM REM badge was sealed. It is quite curious that it has 2 "Royals" in the corps title. Can I ask one more thing, if I may; can you post a pic of the reverse side? Many thanks and regards, Iain

It seems that a "stud" of wm on the back of the M was pushed through the hole then flattened out and the excess metal removed. I hope this is of help to you. Jerry.

Those that I have seen (do not have) have the M fitted in the same manner as the wheel on the RA Officers badge.
