Worn on the waist belt plate by both RA and RE Officers and Other Ranks. Dates vary but both ends of the 1800s to the 1900s for the RA.
A brand new one was issued from stores and worn by one member of the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1991-1992 (me). Marc |

Engineers/Artillery
I bought one of these in white metal with a blank scroll last week, I put it under the heading of RE Vols. pre1902 belt buckle centre, is this correct?

ARTILLERY BELT
Hi Marc
Did the one you were issued have the QVC or QEII crown? The badge is approximately 44MM high by 50MM wide and has regular lugs east/west. No maker mark. If anyone has a picture in use as a belt fitting badge I would appreciate seeing it. Thanks Don |

Marc, I'm in Ontario, Would you like me to put one over to Don "Fire for Effect" for that last remark?...Us young gunners have to stick together! You may wish to check out the attached pics. Small one same size as Don's, the larger is 53mm X 56mm and has four flat lugs. What is it? Regards, DJ.

Thanks DJ.
The smaller one looks like a match. Is it RE or RA or both? Is this one still in use? Don |

OK Marc, That is a surprise! having a QVC. And there was me thinking Don was having a sly dig at your age in his previous post! I thought you might have made a guess at what my and JPF's four lug versions were as mine at least are so obviously different in size. The attached scan is one of my suspect pieces so any comments good or bad are welcome

Hi Marc
Do you know if al the other guys were issued with the same QVC one? Do you think it was old stock or something that had been manufactured more recently? When I saw the QVC crown and the aging I just made the assumption that it was Victorian period. Always something to learn. Thanks Don |

Hi Marc
I was just looking between the two. Is yours void on both sides of the center? The lugs on mine are east/west and yours look north/south. The crown on mine looks a bit flatter but that could be the pictures. Don |

With the Royal Regiment of Artillery the smaller badge was for the Officers waist belt plate, the larger for Other Ranks, as far as I know they ended in 1901. The one I demanded was listed as RA SSgts belt buckle with an NSN, so we took the chance that they were in stock. All 3 were issued to my Regiment and subsequently to me, I gave 1 to the Royal Artillery Sergeant Major at the time, complete with a white buff leather sword belt with slings, I am not sure if he did wear it. None of these badges are Officially available or worn today.
I also wore brass collar badges and guns on my Number 2 Dress Jacket. "Regulation, what regulations"! Marc |

Hi Marc
You threw me for a loop. So it wasn't standard issue since the early 1900's but they still had some in stores that you managed to acquire. Was there a standard issue one for each period with the corresponding monarch's crown? As you can tell I don't know much about badges outside my main area. Whenever I pick up something I like to learn as much as possible about it. Thanks Don |
