Default Unknown Badge to an RA soldier

Dear all,

Apologies for the appalling photo, but it is all I have. Would any kind soul like to hazzard a guess at what the badge is above the stripe, please? A qualification is my best guess. The pic is dated early 1941 and is taken in Birmingham.

Very many thanks in advance

Jonny

Default Unknown badge

It looks to me like a semi official trade badge of a radio/line/telegraphic mechanic depending on the colour of the circle in the middle of the lightning flashes. As this photo is probably in black and white, it would be difficult to tell.

The wearer was probably a member of the RAOC.

A fist in flashes. Unofficially worn by Operators Fire Control (Radar Operators) in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. I do not have any authority for wearing the badge, but I do have one that was worn through WWII and into the 1950’s by an Assistant Instructor Gunnery (Radar). He was politely asked to remove the badge just before an inspection of the Royal Artillery Gunnery Training Establishment at Munsterlager in Germany.

One of these - probably the brown fist:

It reminds me of the 59th (Staffordshire) Infantry Division formation sign? But I'm not sure if RA units were attached in 1941.

Gentlemen,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I always understood that my grandfather (for tis him!), was a radar operator of some ilk. Firstly in Coastal Artillery and latterly with an HAA Regt.

Can any body advise where I can get hold of an original example of this badge please?

Many thanks

Jonny
