Help with unit ID please.

Any ideas on this soldiers unit. Great picture,pity the badge is a little unclear. I was leaning towards Canadian as he has collars and what look like solid downturned shoulder titles. Other ideas were 7 or 8 west yorks from the badge shape but they were blackened and this appears shiney? many thanks for any ideas.

The badge looks like the Infantry Works Company.
