10th Royal Hussars - National Service
The two photos below are of my uncle who served his National Service over 1950 - 1952 with the 10th Royal Hussars on Cromwells (and Comets), some of the time in Germany. He sadly passed away recently and as is so common the subject of his service didn't come up very much and in that era you did your stuff and that was that so there are a few gaps in his story that we are trying to fill in.
The head and shoulders shot may be interesting to confirm the domed backing to the cap badge which I believe to be red. I hope someone can help with the insignia on his right arm above the stripe, I'm not familiar with cavalry rank grades, I'm guessing this is a form of Corporal's rank with the addition of X but what is the badge? Sorry the photo isn't great at showing it but I'm hoping someone in the know will say that's an XYZ as it couldn't be anything else. Also curious is what looks like a tape on his right shoulder strap, it looks too large and close to the edge to be a brass title?? John |

On the right arm of his Battle Dress above the single stripe of a Lance Corporal is possibly a small Prince of Wales feathers regimental arm badge. This would be in white metal on a red or scarlet shaped backing.

Thanks Tim, do you know what that signifies in relation to the rank of lance-corporal?

In the !0th Hussars Regimental arm badges were worn by all Warrant Officers and Non Commissioned Officers. Post WW2 and up until amalgamation the metal POW feathers worn on Battle Dress were in three sizes. Large for senior ranks (Sergeant to WO1), medium for Corporal and small for Lance Corporal.
Sourced from Cavalry Warrant Officers and Non Commissioned Officers Arm badges by Linaker and Dine. Tim
