Evening all, wondering if anybody has any info about a F. W. C. & S. Ltd. I picked up a sweetheart today with that company's mark on it but can't find out much about them. Any info gratefully received.
Many thanks Alli |

Frank William Cole was a silver and gold chain maker of Vyse Street Birmingham. He died in 1910 but he did have a son - a Ralph Edgar Cole who took over the business in October 1910 but continued to trade under the existing name of F W Cole. It is feasible therefore that he later amended to business to become F W Cole and Son. In 1910, he registered his maker Mark as Chester silver Hallmark F.W.C
PS: if you found it in a bargain bin then you indeed have acquired a real bargain! |

Is the badge actually an RAF one, so not predating 1918?
Not hall marked silver then 'Lil? |

Aah thank you, could fit couldn't it. Hope all is well with you by the way.
Well judging by eBay I paid less than it is selling for, but its not going to fund the getaway in the Caribbean sadly. |

Its chrome not silver and the condition is utterly spotless, hence my reservations on it. Its a nice thing but a bit odd.

I have a couple of Chrome RAF Sweethearts and they do look good.
I mentioned silver because as time went on many jewellers who worked in silver and gold took advantage of metals such as Chrome because they do not tarnish. The FWC mark that the son registered would only be used on silver items. On the later post 1918 items through to WW2, it is probable that the business expanded and hence the addition of ā& Sā on a maker stamp so as not to confuse with the registered silver mark. A strong possibility but could be completely wrong of course. Cheers James |

Even for a chrome piece it must never have been worn, it's in near mint condition.
That's great info, thank you, as you say, strong possibility. |
