Unusual headdress ?

Similar thoughts to my own. The man is George H Thomas of Chester so the headdress is quite a mystery. Peter

A close look at the photo suggests that the jacket shoulder straps are of the removable first pattern worn with the service dress jacket introduced in 1902 and worn until replaced by shoulder cords. This suggests a date after the end of the war in South Africa.
I believe that for a short period around this time Mounted Infantry were formed in the Regular Infantry battalions and dressed in a similar uniform to that worn in the Boer War including a felt bush hat. The white horsehair plume could be that of the Royal Fusiliers as seen in the attached photo. So possibly Mounted Infantry of the Royal Fusiliers? Jon |
