Good evening Peter, I fully take your point and agree with you. But I really feel strongly that a seasoned, professional auctioneer would spare buyers almost endless, childish attempts at humour on subjects such as fish and chips and varieties of cakes. Each to his or her own - me? I simply turned off the auction in despair. Dreadful.

I am afraid I have to agree with Peter, I have had items knocked down to another bidder before I have had a chance to put my hand up, as to whether the lucky winner was a regular at the auction, who knows.

I have also left a commission bid and had it knocked down to someone in the room for the same price as I left, this time the lucky winner was a regular at the auction.

We don't have a lot of auction options to attend these days, thanks to Covid. Early last month, I attended my first auction in person for a long time.

I only wanted one lot (a lovely pair of period miniatures in a darling contemporary leatherette box thoughtfully marked with gold blocked letters "WAR MEDALS", just in case you thought they were something else....)

There were about 6 in the room (seating for around 30) and I was pleased that I did attend.

The auctioneer kicked things along with good humour and a banter that made it very pleasant.
