I am not an "Arty" nor a British subject but a French man (nobody's perfect ) I am quite sure you'll wonder why a "frog" is interested by the LY? In fact I am very interested by British units which fought during the summer 1944 in Normandy where I live, and the 153rd (LY) Field Regiment RA TA was one of these units. They fought as field armoured artillery regiment with the Guards armoured Division. I have a small collection of badges from this unit and I would be glad to have your opinion about them. The cap badges look good to me, one is well used by strong polishing and its slider is marked "Gaunt London". The cap badge with lugs is silver plated or sterling unmarked, I think it could be a pattern worn by officers during the WWII and onward. Best regards. J-F

Hi J-F
What an excellent collection for the 153rd (LYPAO) FR RA! I like the Gilt Metal Badge ...... I love the Brass badge........I am especially interested in the silver plated badge you have..... did you buy that badge on eBay?

Griff M-J,
Thanks for your comments, the cloth title, Guards divisional sign and RA strip came from the original owner but as they were sold by a dealer I could not know his name. Both gilding and brass cap badges came from ebay and the SP officier cap badge came from a serious English dealer. By the way do you know if sergents and WO wore arm badges above their ranks marks during WWII? Best regards J-F

Hi J-F
Gunnery Sgts wore the RA Gun above their stripes.... the LYPAO kept their Cap, Collars & Shoulder Titles...... but buttons, Rank & Trade = Royal Artillery. When in No.1 Dress they were fully LYPAO.

If they were obeying all the RA rules then all Sergeants and Staff Sergeants should have been wearing the sleeve gun above their chevrons, regardless of trade or qualification.

Absolutley and I am sure they did. The LYPAO were Cavalrymen that were "reluctant" Artillery dont forget...... and made sure they kept their identity (they were "ordered" to wear RA buttons). I have some photo's of G/Sgts wearing the "Guns" from the 153rd..... but none of the 154th at the moment.

Does anybody recognise the trade badge..... is it a "best in Troop" badge?
He is wearing the "RA" FFS Cap with the LYPAO Blues..... he also wears the c1928-39 Badge in both collar & cap. George was a member of the Yeomanry prior to WW2, thats why he is wearing the older type badges.

Hi Griff,
According to a booklet published in 1942, badge is for "Driver Mechanic". Wheel with a crown on top was "Driver Instructor". Cheers, Tinto |

Thanks Tinto
I knew George.... he was a lovley man, he looked after the LY Meuseum from 1990-2000. I learnt much about the 1930's LYPAO from him, I first met him in 1991.

You can see Walter Smith wearing the 10th Ind Div Patch (also the small RA flash) on his left arm... also the RA Red/Blue diamond underneath the LYPAO cap badge.
This photo was taken near BOLOGNA on route 64 in the Vanguard of the 10th Indian Division (13th Corps: 10th Ind Div/New Zealand Div).
