George Burton Escott Russell . 24/1310, as a Territorial Sergeant in the 5th Wellington. He is wearing a W (for Wellington) on his shoulder tab.

Here is a pair of "W" for you to compare Iain... a little over 12mm high and 11mm wide so maybe not regulation size.

Happy New Year to you all.

James

David Alexander Kenny , 1/87 and 11/2277. Died of illness 6/4/1918 , so the photo he is in is taken pre war .

A very interesting person, he was promoted 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Wellington in January 1912. He also started the Kiwi concert party.

A story about him on my Facebook page Unknown warriors of the NZEF , by collaborator Graham Grist writing about the New Zealanders buried at Walton hospital.

So it seems some officers wore the scrolled badge 6/48 or the bronze variety ,pre war territorial (maybe Samoa ? ) , while other ranks wore the non scrolled badges 6/50 and 6/56 for the 5th Wellington company, pre 1920's

All photos of 5th Wellington officers 1912 to 1915 that have seen show the Gaunt bronze scrolled badges being worn, the only exception is Colonel Robert Collins who is photographed wearing a gilt or very possibly a gold scrolled badge, however, Colonel Collins badge could be pre territorial.

5th Regiment officers 17 April 1912, David Kenny should be there.

In the 1981 when I got my copy of the Badges of the New Zealand army ' by David Corbett ' it shows the scrolled badge in the header(not made clear if brass or bronze) , and as you do as a uniformed teenager I followed the trend by getting the brass scrolled badges for my collection. Not sure if I was only one to make that mistake. Oldham's is just as ambiguous , but at least now a clearer picture is emerging . Perhaps James or others can show their bronze J R Gaunt badges ?

''If '' there is another New Zealand badge reference book , or Oldham catalogue , best clear up this ambiguity surrounding the 5th Wellington company . Yes your bronze gaunt badges are the real deal

As with the Wellington 4th Battalion badges and 11th Taranaki honors badges, there are still many badge mysteries to be solved.
